PREPARATION
We will ensure that your employees know how to minimise the risk of becoming victims here in the UK, or abroad, whether travelling to work or at work, and ensure that they know how to react to mitigate the risk to themselves and keep themselves safe in the unfortunate event that they do get caught up in a high risk situation
Whatever your business and whatever the task of your staff, travel outside the UK, but less obviously within the UK, always involves exposing your people to new and differing risks. The nature of your business and of their tasks may alter that risk profile.
It is important for you, your organisation and your people to understand the risks to which they may be exposed, and how to mitigate them, to keep your people and your business safe.
Let's look at two scenarios:
The cruise line crew member or speaker.
You are a company that operates cruise ships. You have a guest speaker or crew member who you want to join the ship in a foreign port.
The country in which that port is located is one whose population speaks a foreign language. They may also use an alphabet other than the latin alphabet.
You have booked your speaker/crew on a flight to the nearest international airport to the port and arranged their transport to the UK airport of departure. However, the destination airport is some distance from port and transport is required between the two.
Your speaker/crew member has not previously travelled to the region concerned.
Is your
An employee or executive has to traveling abroad:
Your business has interests or wishes to explore opportunities abroad. A personal presence is required for a number of days.
Your organisation has no permanent presence in the country concerned.
The employee(s) needing to travel has not been to the region before and has no knowledge of the local language.
The only flights from Europe necessitate an arrival time early in the morning, around dawn.
The destination airport is half an hour driving time from the hotel that your contacts in country or your travel agent have booked for your employee(s).
What provisions have you made to ensure that both you and your employee(s) understand the risks to which they may be exposed?
What steps have you taken to identify, define, mitigate and manage those risks?
Does your employee know how to react and what actions to take should they experience a health, security or safety problem?
The Potential Victim of Crime
Your offices are located in a large and busy city in the UK or abroad.
The city contains diverse communities, like most cities it suffers a degree of crime against persons, including street robberies, sexual assaults and knife crime, that give rise to concern in the media and amongst politicians, as they do in London.
The city also hosts frequent protests and demonstrations that may be generally peaceful, but have occasionally been known to turn violent.
The city has been the target of terrorist attacks in the past, and the threat, even if not high, remains.
Your staff generally commute to work on public transport. Some occasionally have to travel during working hours to meet clients etc.
Your employees come from across the spectrum of ethnic, religious and other communities living in the city and, while the environment within your premises is collegial and friendly, outside tensions may exist between some of those communities and, as a result, some of your employees may be at higher risk than others of being subject to crime or harassment while away from the office.
Have you taken steps to help your employees: 1) minimise the risk of being caught up in a potentially dangerous situation and of becoming a victim, and 2) know how to minimise the risk to themselves should they be unfortunate enough to find themselves in such a situation? Do you think, as an employer, you should you take such steps?
